An authentic 19th-century French assiette parlante by Mouzin Frères & Cie of Onnaing, in northern France.
The black transferware scene depicts a soldier returning home to his mother, accompanied by a small dog. Beneath the illustration is a wonderfully dark exchange:
“Are you returning as a captain, my boy?”
“No, Mother—I’m returning blind in one eye.”
Numbered 2 in its original series, the scene is surrounded by an extraordinary pierced border molded to resemble woven basketry. The intricate openwork, warm cream color and beautifully aged surface make this a particularly distinctive example of a French talking plate.
The original Mouzin Frères & Cie, Onnaing maker’s mark remains on the reverse. The plate carries visible crazing, age-toning and natural wear consistent with its history. These details are part of its antique character. Intended for decorative use.
